FENCING: Luton Sword Club take title

Luton Sword Club were crowned Three Counties League overall winners recently.

The club were pushed all the way, but pipped nearest rivals St Albans by 144 wins to 141 in a division containing Bedford, Milton Keynes, Watford, Stevenage and Hemel Hemstead.

Luton’s winning fencers during the year included Geoff Disch, Jake Hutchins, Luke Hoy, Oliver Smith, Julian Parker, George Howard, Aidan Gallen, Oliver Smith and Yvonne Carter.

Meanwhile, Luton Sixth Form College arranged for the club to hold six introductory lessons.

Head coach Nick Ashmenall said: “I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the students and was able to introduce the more advanced electric foil after just five lessons.”
