First Team GB vest for Bakare

Lutonian Sabrina Bakare is the latest young athlete to be selected for higher honours after going through Active Luton’s developmental athletics programmes.

The 17-year-old Barnfield West Academy student earned her first Team GB vest competing in the 400m and 4x400m relay at the Loughborough International Athletics Meeting at the weekend.

In the 400m, she finished in sixth place after clocking 54.63secs, in a race won by World Indoor champion Perri Shakes-Drayton.

Active Luton, who run sports and recreation activities and facilities in Luton on behalf of Luton Borough Council, have a number of athletics programmes at the Stockwood Park track, local schools and other community venues.

Helen Barnett, chief executive at Active Luton, said: “Sabrina is an outstanding talent and an inspiration to young people across Luton.”

“The discipline and commitment she has shown in her training has been remarkable and she thoroughly deserves everything she’s achieved.

“She is one of many young athletes benefitting from our modern sports facilities and programmes and I would like to congratulate Catrina Lewis for the Athletic development work, Jane Dixon who coaches Sabrina and the rest of the coaching team who continue to get the very best out of our young athletes.”
