Barton fall to league champions Kettering

Barton Rovers lost 2-0 to the newly crowned league champions Kettering at Sharpenhoe Road on Saturday.

Kettering took the lead after 48 minutes. Ogbonna won a disputed free kick 25 yards out and Steve Kinniburgh planted a lovely left foot past the defensive wall in off the left upright.

Kettering were now faring better in the conditions and Ogbonna advanced on the right, but turned his left foot shot into the side netting from a good position.

Barton decided to take the game by the horns withdrawing Jhai Dillon and bringing on forward Tuki Tayali on 54 minutes.

Rhys Hoenes had been well controlled but did get in a low cross for Jack Keating to flick at goal but Knight saved. From a corner, the hosts had a great chance – but Paul Andrews’ header was straight at Knight.

It was 2-0 after 78 minutes. Forster spilled a corner and two more attempts to collect the ball saw him lose possession. That man Kinniburgh was on hand to fire the ball in. Barton immediately swept forward and Hoenes looked certain to score – but Ash Robinson got in a late but great clearance.

Rovers slip to sixth, still just one point off a play off place.

Their final two games are both on the road with first up a trip to seventh place Hanwell Town on Saturday.
