Jack Marriott notched a double, while Cameron McGeehan’s free kick and Joe Pigott’s stunning strike put the seal on easily Luton’s best showing of the campaign at Kenilworth Road.

Jones believes the manner of the performance might just excite the majority of the 8,000-plus Luton fans about their side’s potential for next term.

He said: “It was an excellent performance and I’m not going to get carried away, but it’s something to build on and sends the fans home away with a little bit of ‘what could happen.’

“Providing that we’re at it and do our work then it’s possible.

“We spoke all week about the intensity in our training and our play, as we didn’t want it to be an end of season game.

“We felt we’ve needed to give the fans something and I felt we did.

“We were excellent from start to finish, apart from a five minute period after half time where they looked like they could get back into it, in terms of causing us problems when they went wide.

“Even then, we’d had chances before that and we thoroughly deserved it as we had lots and lots and lots of chances.

“I’m very, very pleased how we’ve gone about our work and the manner of the win as well.”

After only scoring one first half goal in their previous 11 games at home, Hatters had managed three by 34 minutes of this encounter, with an at times, blistering display.

They went on to notch four in the Football League for the first time since being promoted back from the Conference too, as Jones continued: “It was one of the first time we’ve been really clinical at home in the first half.

“We’ve had halves where we’ve had same amount of chances, and we’ve had games here we’ve really, really dominated but haven’t quite got the goal and it’s been frustration, then we get hit by the sucker punch.

“I asked for a clinical edge, a real bravery in possession, and for tempo in our play.

“I’m pleased, the goals were the icing on the cake, some of the football I thought was magnificent as well.

“The link play, combinations that we do, I thought we were wonderful.

“We looked like we were going to score, we hit the post, the keeper made some good saves.

“I’m playing it down a little bit, but some of our play was outstanding, so it’s a good day.”
