With some crazy scorelines going round the division once more, Thursday’s opponents Stevenage hitting five at Barnsley, while Stockport and Oxford both struck four in victories at Wigan and Leicester, then once Jamie Donley opened the scoring, there was every chance the Hatters could go and rack up a healthy success themselves to boost their goal difference.

That didn’t materialise, as despite having 23 shots and seven on target, they were pegged back by Jaze Kabia’s well-taken equaliser, spurning a hatful of chances, meaning their run of scoring two or more in the league, spanning 11 matches, was ended, having to make do with a point. Boss Jack Wilshere made three changes from the 2-0 triumph over Stockport on Wednesday evening, Jake Richards, Gideon Kodua and Izzy Jones coming in for Dan Gore, Kasey Palmer and Benny Benagr, only the latter not on the bench due to his hamstring injury.

Town made a bright start as they looked to continue the momentum earned from midweek, as Wells could have broken the deadlock early on when released by George Johnston's ball over the top, but his first touch wasn't ideal, allowing Joseph Olowu to get back and block. The corner wasn't dealt with well by visiting keeper Nathan Baxter and from the second cross, Jamie Donley unleashed a spectacular volley that wasn’t too far away.

Luton kept up their high energy start, Kodua revelling in his central role as he spun away from his man on eight minutes and played in Wells once more, who did get his effort away this time, Baxter able to gather. The Hatters were dealt a real blow on 21 minutes when Harrison Ashby, who had been so instrumental in the midweek victory, went down holding his groin and had to hobble off, academy graduate Harry Fox on for his League One debut, heading to the left wingback role, Jones over to the right.

It was the inspired Kodua who had a huge hand in Town taking the lead on 25 minutes when racing on to Johnston’s lofted pass up the left flank. Outmuscling Olowu, he then found the run of Donley who took a great first touch and a not too bad second either, beating Baxter at his near post to open his Luton account against a side he served so well on loan during the 2024-25 campaign.

Town looked to hammer their advantage home as Kodua continued to impress on the ball, cutting in and shooting straight at the keeper, while Wells was then played in by Donley’s excellent vision only to scuff disappointingly at Baxter. Orient were somehow back in it with their first real chance on 35 minutes, neither Jones or Hakeem Odoffin taking charge on the right, as the ball was played forward, Mads Andersen not dealing with it, Kabai able to nip in and venture into the box with the Danish defender scrambling, giving Josh Keeley little chance with a terrific hit.

Having been in complete control, Wilshere’s side almost found themselves 2-1 down moments later, as Yusuf Akhamrich’s cross travelled through to Demetri Mitchell who got underneath his attempt. Somehow, the hosts didn't retake the lead on 41 minutes, when following some poor set-pieces, they finally got a corner right, Donley’s deep delivery met by Odoffin who nodded against the post and Kodua unable to convert from a yard or so out, as Orient threw themselves in the way to make a desperate goal-line block.

Donley then had a crack from outside the box that appeared to be arrowing into the bottom corner until Baxter stuck out a hand to parry. Having dominated proceedings, it was the O’s finishing stronger, extremely close to catching Town out from a clever short corner routine, Idris El Mizouni left completely unmarked in the box, Keeley making an impressive save to prevent the hosts from undeservedly trailing.

After the break, Town seemed like they were going to carry on enjoying the better of things, as they should have moved ahead inside two minutes, Kodua clipping Wells away, the Bermudan international once more losing the battle with Baxter, Donley’s follow-up blocked twice too. Jones, who was having easily his best game of the season, set off on a mazy run which saw him find Kodua to curl waywardly wide, as the attacker fed Wells, who was wiped out by Olowu for a yellow, Donley slamming the free kick into the stands.

Town made what looked like a strong triple substitution on the hour mark, Palmer, Callum Marshall and Gore on for Walsh, Donley and Wells, Palmer instantly winning the ball back high up, seeing two crosses cleared away, Luton keeping the pressure on, Odoffin’s volley charged down. Kodua continued to impress by constantly receiving possession, rolling away from his markers and driving forward, finding Marshall on the left who burst away, his cross inches away from Gore in the centre, the ball recycled by Jones to the advancing Odoffin whose shot was deflected into Baxter’s gloves.

With Kodua unable to last the full 90 due to cramp, deadline day signing Tudor Mendel came on for his debut with seven minutes left, as with Orient finally enjoying a foothold, the main concern was that Town would end up being caught and leaving empty-handed. It almost happened when Armando Dobra, who like Theo Archibald, threw himself on the floor to try and win a foul, only to instantly get up and carry on, volleyed at Keeley from outside the box.

Jones won yet another free kick when clipped by Archibald in full flight, but there was to be no heroics from Marshall this time, his set-piece hitting the wall, as the hosts had to make do with a point.
