Town chief confident he has enough within his squad

Luton boss Rob Edwards is confident the Hatters haven’t been left ‘light’ on the right following the departure of Chiedozie Ogbene to Premier League side Ipswich Town during the now closed transfer window.

The 27-year-old had been playing in the right wingback role for Town during the opening matches of the Championship campaign, starting the first three fixtures until he was snapped up by the Tractor Boys to boost their squad for the top flight campaign, making an immediate debut in the 1-1 draw against Fulham on Saturday.

It meant Luton’s teenage summer signing Reuell Walters was moved into what looks like his most natural role for the first time from the opening whistle against QPR on Friday evening, the ex-Arsenal youngster turning in another tenacious display on what was just his fifth outing in senior football, all of those coming since he arrived at Kenilworth Road a few months ago.

Edwards had originally spoken about wanting to replace the rapid Republic of Ireland international before the deadline passed at 11pm last Friday night, but with no incomings other than defensive midfielder Lamine Fanne, who will join the club permanently in January, it leaves Luton with just Walters and the injured Japanese international Daiki Hashioka as the only two realistic candidates for the role vacated by Ogbene.

With no opportunity to bolster his squad other than free agents until the January window opens, asked if he had now had a limited selection available to him now, Edwards said: “I don’t think so, I think we’ve got lots of options. We’ve got Hashi to come back into it as well, not everyone’s seen Hashi fully.

"We’ve had to use him in so many different positions last year when we had so many injuries, people haven’t seen him play in his best position. So we’ve got good numbers to cover in those areas, we’ve got different shapes we can play as well to make sure we can keep a balance of having control but having a real attacking threat on that side. So I don’t feel that we’re light in that area.”
