'Embarrassed' Lockyer scoops five prizes at Hatters' annual awards evening

Luton Town defender Tom Lockyer admitted he was slightly ‘embarrassed’ picked up a superb five awards at the club’s Luton Town Supporters’ Trust annual awards ceremony held at Venue 360 last night, including the main Player of the Season gong.

The 28-year-old, who won the Luton News’ Hatter of the Season as well, was also named jointly named Players’ Player of the Season with top goalscorer Carlton Morris, plus the Junior Supporters’ Player of the Season, Bobbers Travel Club Player of the Season and Internet Player of the Season.

It capped a terrific campaign for the Welsh international, who was also named in the Championship Team of the Season recently, as on receiving the awards, Lockyer said: “As far as seasons go, it’s up there for me.

"If I’m being honest with you, I’m a little bit embarrassed.

"This team’s full of absolutely excellent players, Carlton’s put the ball in the net 20 times this season and we’ve had other players performing outstandingly, so to have all of these awards, I’m a little bit embarrassed but I’m very thankful at the same time.

"It’s lovely to be recognised and I’m sure my old man and my old dear will be very happy as well.

"I’d trade all these trophies now for a walk up them steps at Wembley though.”

Morris also picked up the Signing of the Season award, as after joining for a club record fee from Barnsley in the summer, he has had a magnificent first year at Kenilworth Road, netting 20 goals in the second tier, the first Luton player to do that since Brian Stein back in the 1981-82 campaign.

Midfielder Jordan Clark took home the Ian Pearce Memorial Trophy, having won the most home man of the match awards given out by the Luton News, with four.

Winner of the Mick Harford Trophy for Goal of the Season was Alfie Doughty, his stunning strike against QPR taking the honours, while Harford himself won the Kevin Catlin Memorial Trophy Outstanding Contribution Award.

Joe Johnson was named Young Luton Town Player of the Season, after an impressive year with the U18s, while also making his professional debut in last month’s 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.

There was also a new prize, named the Beacon of Light Award, which was went to Fred Onyedinma, after his interaction with Jack Berry, an autistic Sunderland supporter, at the Stadium of Light in March.
