Hatters and Tykes charged by the FA for final whistle melee

Luton and Barnsley have until Tuesday to respond

Luton Town and Barnsley have both been charged by the FA following the melee that followed the Hatters’ 2-1 League One victory at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night.

Goals from Mads Andersen and Nahki Wells were enough for Town to claim three points, Makenzie Kirk on target for the Tykes, who felt they should have won a last-gasp penalty when Amani Richards went over the leg of Kal Naismith inside the area. Referee Carl Brook didn’t point to the spot, instead giving Luton the free kick and booking the visiting attacker for diving. Following the full time whistle, it led to an angry exchange between the two managers Jack Wilshere and Daniel Stendel, with a number of coaching staff and players joining in afterwards.

The two clubs have now been charged and have until Tuesday to respond, as a statement from the FA said: “Luton Town and Barnsley have been charged following the mass confrontation at their EFL League One match on Tuesday 20 October. It's alleged that both clubs failed to ensure that their players and/or technical area staff did not behave in a way which was improper and/or provocative after the full-time whistle. Luton Town and Barnsley have until Tuesday 27 October to provide their responses.”

Asked about the incident during his post-match press conference, both Wilshere and Stendel played it down, with the Luton manager saying: “He just grabbed my hand, listen, he wants to win, I want to win. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and his team. I watched them a lot over the last few days, probably four or five games, they haven’t got the results they wanted, but they’re a good team.

"They’re a high pressing team, they want to hit you on transition. I thought we managed that really well, but nothing but respect for them. At the end we shook hands and it’s just passion, I want to win, he wants to win, and that’s that. Listen, we have to be respectful and we are and they were as well in my opinion, but also sometimes you can see the togetherness in those moments where we wanted to win so badly and we’ve got each other’s back.”
