Long servant stretchered off after a clash of heads

Luton Town have confirmed that midfielder Jordan Clark is recovering in hospital following a sickening clash of heads that saw him stretchered off in the early stages of this afternoon’s 2-2 draw against Notts County at Kenilworth Road.

The 32-year-old, who signed a new contract to remain with the club in the summer, looked destined to meet Emilio Lawrence's left-wing cross and nod home his first goal of the season, only to put his header straight at Magpies stopper James Belshaw. When he was in the process of doing so, Clark was wiped out by defender Darius Lipsiuc in a completely accidental fashion, the action stopped immediately by referee Ben Speedie for both players to receive treatment.

Although Lipsiuc could continue, Clark remained down for a good few minutes, eventually stretchered off to applause from both sets of supporters. A club statement issued on the midfielder said: “We are able to update supporters on Jordan Clark’s condition following the clash of heads that resulted in him having to be carried off in the first half. After being taken to the dressing room, Jordan was responsive and talking to the medical team, but has been taken to hospital for further assessment. All our love and thoughts are with Clicker for a speedy recovery.”

Speaking afterwards, Hatters boss Jack Wilshere continued: “I don’t think he’ll appreciate when I tell him he should have scored, but the most important thing is he’s okay as it didn’t look good. I haven’t heard from him, but that was the first thing that we asked at half time,. He’s alert, he’s talking. We were worried, I think it affected us as well on the pitch, we lost our rhythm a little bit after that, maybe because of the stop, maybe because our mate is hurt, but he’s in the best place. Let’s see what the tests come back as, but he’s okay.”

Following Clark’s injury, Town weren’t able to muster anything in an attacking sense until taking the lead on 42 minutes through Nahki Wells’ penalty. They were instantly pegged back when Cal Roberts fired home a 20-yard volley and then fell behind with an hour gone, Ollie Cooper left unmarked to score.

Callum Marshall netted to ensure Luton remained unbeaten this term, as Wilshere added: “I think that killed the tempo in the game which suited them. They’re good at what they do, they make it difficult to play against, they disrupt the play, and that definitely didn’t help. We have to be able to deal with that and cope with that and find our rhythm quicker.”
