Luton fell just short in their attempts to gain another point to their Premier League survival hopes when they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United at Kenilworth Road on Sunday evening.
The Hatters had fallen 2-0 down inside seven minutes when Rasmus Højlund scored twice, before Carlton Morris quickly pulled one back. The hosts then gave everything in their attempts to level, but couldn’t breach the Red Devils’ goal again, and to find out how the Town players rated, see below.
5. Amari’i Bell: 7.5
Made an awful error inside 40 seconds that allowed Højlund to race clear and put the visitors ahead. Deserves great credit for the way in which he didn't let that mistake get to him though as could have crumbled, making one absolutely vital block when United pressed for what would have been a clinching third. Confidence unwavering, he still continued to want the ball and move through the press of the United attackers, while also took up some good advanced positions in the latter stages too. 6. Alfie Doughty: 8
Was a constant out ball for the Hatters, as he hugged the touchline allowing his team-mates to find him time and time again with the diagonal crossfield pass. Helped Chong set up Morris to bring Luton back into the game, but was left frustrated he didn't make it 2-2 just before half time, dragging wide on his right foot. Flashed in a huge number of crosses during the contest, but was unable to locate an orange shirt for what would have been a deserved leveller based on effort alone. Photo: Liam Smith
7. Sambi Lokonga: 9
Absolutely terrific performance on the evening as he was a real reason why Luton were able to go toe-to-toe with the opponents and have more possession than United, enjoying an almost flawless passing success rate. Effortlessly won the ball back from the visitors and once more picked out Doughty with some terrific vision. Sent one effort wide, but the roar that went up when he made his stunning sliding block on Fernandes’ goalbound shot having rounded Kaminski will live long in the memory. Photo: Liam Smith
8. Ross Barkley: 9
Almost running out of superlatives for what he does on a weekly basis in a Luton shirt, as his ghosting around Dalot and then racing away from Casimero was quite incredible. Kept on probing and pushing, picking off a sloppy Maguire pass to find Woodrow for a decent chance, firing an attempt over himself. Didn't neglect his defensive duties either, making some fine clearing headers from United corners. Such a shame his late effort from Berry's set-piece wasn't a few inches lower to drop underneath the bar. Photo: Liam Smith
