Andros Townsend’s first half goal was enough for Rob Edwards’ side to triumph and to find out how the Hatters players rated on the day, see below.
5. Amari’i Bell: 8.5
Given the captain’s armband in Lockyer’s absence, it was easily his best display of the season to date. Good positioning saw him able to repel a number of dangerous crosses from the right in the early stages, while even though he was caught out once or twice, still had the courage to take his man on when one-on-one in the way he did last term. Deserved his moments of fortune as Kaminski's save rebounded off him and went over, while thankful he just held his line to ensure Isak was flagged offside when scoring. Photo: Liam Smith
6. Alfie Doughty (STAR MAN): 9.5
Quite simply magnificent from start to finish on the day. Began out on the left and his ability to run at pace with the ball kept Newcastle on their guard, driving at Trippier and winning the corner that he then delivered perfectly for Townsend to do the rest via Barkley's flick. Even when moving on to the right at half time when Kabore went off, he didn't stop, showing wonderful stamina to continually break forward and get into the visitors box, ensuring Town didn't just sit back to hold on to their lead. 7. Albert Sambi Lokonga: 9.5
Showed all the reasons why Town were so keen on getting him back after the hamstring injury that wrecked his start to life at the club. Happy to take possession in tight spaces and beat a man to get things moving, as his partnership with Barkley already looks like one that could really blossom into something special as well. Also noticeable was his willingness to get stuck in and win the ball for the Hatters during his 80 minutes. If he can stay fit then based on that display, Luton have a serious player at their disposal. Photo: Liam Smith
8. Ross Barkley: 9.5
Knowing he is in the side makes every game that bit more exciting to watch as the midfielder always does something jaw-dropping to get supporters off their seats. Took the ball under pressure as Luton were able to play some of their best football of the season, grabbing a rare headed assist for Townsend too. Thought he had bagged the goal of the season with a sensational strike from 30 yards only to unfortunately hit the underside of the bar. Wonderful run set up Adebayo and almost sealed the win late on, shooting just wide. Photo: Liam Smith
