Jarrod Bowen and Kurt Zouma scored for the visitors, before Mads Andersen pulled one back in stoppage time for the Hatters, and to find out how Town’s players rated on the evening, see below.
5. Amari’i Bell: 6
Looked like he was starting to adapt to life in the top flight during the opening stages as the Hatters were solid, restricting their hosts to very little, bringing the ball forward too. However, both he and Giles didn’t deal with Bowen on two occasions and the in-form forward made them pay with the second. The odd poor pass was picked off, leading to a chance for Benrahma, although his dink into the area did lead to the Hatters pulling one back. Photo: Liam Smith
6. Ryan Giles: 6
Managed to get the ball out of his feet and deliver some crosses from the left, one that squirted out of Alphonse’s hands, as he burst away from Bowen to find Morris who headed just over. Defensive issues remain though as twice he and Bell let Bowen go, as they got away with it once, but not twice, the forward heading Paqueta's cross in. Tried to create a leveller after the break until going off for Kabore. Photo: Liam Smith
7. Marvelous Nakamba (STAR MAN): 7.5
Appears to have shaken off some of the understandable rust he had picked up after not having a proper pre-season, as he got stuck into his Hammers counterparts in the opening stages, including the impressive Paqueta. Passing kept Town ticking over during their brightest moments, while might have had an assist as well if Adebayo had gambled on his measured cross. Photo: Liam Smith
8. Ross Barkley: 5.5
Looked like he might have had a real influence in the early stages as he had two decent shooting opportunities, wayward with both, the second he should have done better with. Struggled to really get into proceedings afterwards, as a lack of game time appeared to catch up with him, taken off with 20 minutes to go. Someone who Edwards will definitely want to persevere with though. Photo: Liam Smith
