The visitors had led 2-0 at the break through Ollie Watkins’ double, only for Town to hit back through Tahith Chong and Carlton Morris, as they looked like earning a point at the very least. However, Lucas Digne headed home late on to steal the points, and to find out how the Hatters players rated on the evening, see below.
9. Tahith Chong: 7
Not much came off in a first half for the midfielder or the rest of his team-mates, with one woeful cross sent into orbit summing up their efforts. That all changed after the break, as he could combine with Doughty once more, the pair having much more joy on the left. Plenty of driving runs and in the right place to halve the deficit when Villa couldn’t get the ball away, tucking home his second league goal of the season. Late injury restricted Town’s efforts to commit men forward in the closing stages. Photo: Liam Smith
10. Andros Townsend: 6
Back in for his first league start since the 1-1 draw at Burnley, but struggled to really provide any moments of danger in a disappointing first half for the Hatters as Villa were in complete control. Did manage one header that flew narrowly over just before the break, he was then taken off early in the second period, as Luton began to start the comeback that should have led to a point. 11. Carlton Morris: 8
Barely saw the ball in the first half, but it was a completely different story after the break. Early header didn't come down in time, before he did superbly to keep Doughty's corner alive at the back post for Luton to make it 2-1 and give themselves a chance. Wonderful controlled volley brought Luton level as he scored for a third straight Premier League home game. Looked like he might have put Town ahead too, when he leapt magnificently only to unfortunately put his towering header straight at Martinez. Photo: Liam Smith
12. Chiedozie Ogbene (SUB): 6.5
Had a difficult opening 45 minutes as he was called upon immediately when Bell couldn't continue. Seemed slightly unsure of where he was playing to begin with, as in an unfamiliar left wingback role, he unfortunately played Watkins onside for the second goal and saw a few passes picked off too. That changed after the break, as with the Hatters on the front foot from the word go, he gave the Villa defence a torrid time when back in his natural position on the right once more, the only thing lacking a final ball.
