Town boss Nathan Jones revealed that both George Moncur and Ryan Tunnicliffe turned down offers to leave the club during the recent transfer window.

The pair, who have seen their game-time limited at Kenilworth Road this season, had chances to move on ahead of the deadline after offers were received for them, but opted to remain at the club to fight for their place.

Moncur’s desire is already paying off, as he started a second league game in succession for only the second time in his Luton career this afternoon, scoring Town’s goal in a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield, his first strike since December last year.

Although Tunnicliffe was one of two changes from the 1-0 win at Rotherham on Wednesday night, he came on with 12 minutes to go, as Jones said: “We want to push boundaries here.

"George Moncur had an opportunity to leave in the window, and we said to him, 'you can go back to League One and get promoted, and then come here, but you have to learn, you have to get better as a player, as sooner or later, someone’s got to get you by the scruff of the neck and say this is what you need to do to be a top Championship player.'

“He’s now taking it on board, the penny seems to have dropped for him, and he’s a great kid.

“I bought him here, even though he signed after I left, I bought him here, that was lined up, so I know what he can do and he’s showing that.

“In possession no problem whatsoever, he’s being productive, out of possession can we get more out of him? Yes. Are we? Yes. Is he a better player now for it? Definitely.

“We’ve had a few, Ryan Tunnicliffe was another.

"Ryan Tunnicliffe had an opportunity to go to a wonderful football club and didn't, he wanted to stay, wants to fight, he believes in what we do here.

"We’re delighted with that, because we want to achieve something and we're going to need a strong squad to do that.”

On Moncur specifically, who was starting only his third game since the Hatters returned to the second tier. Jones added: "He’s been really patient the boy, really patient and looked brilliant in training.

"Then we gave him his opportunity against Rotherham, he took it and he was excellent apart from finishing, because he should have scored.

"I just felt he was on the brink of scoring, I didn’t envisage him scoring like he did today, but I'm delighted for him and he lifts it.

"He’s like Pelly Ruddock, he’s exactly like Pelly Ruddock, he lifts people, he's been given his opportunity and taken it, I'm so happy for him."
