Heartbroken Hungarian Janos Kovacs has revealed he was ‘shocked and surprised’ to be let go by new Town boss John Still – but fully understood his reasons for doing so, writes Mark Wood.

The 27-year-old defender scored eight goals in 91 appearances for the Hatters and admitted: “I always said a massive, massive part of my heart is there for Luton Town.

“That’s why it was a bit of a heartbreak as well, that I can’t be part of this family.

A back and hamstring injury hampered Kovacs’ chances to impress Still as he played just an hour under the new boss before injury forced him off in the 1-0 victory at Stockport.

Kovacs is now back in Hungary, but understands Still’s reasons behind the decision.

He added: “He was in the situation where there were too many centre-halves already in contract and I was the unlucky one whose contract was running out at the end of the season and an easy one to get rid of.”
