The midfielder, who had been handed his first start of the season, was adjudged to have dived in the final moments by referee Paul Tierney, and received a second booking.

But Rooney was adamant he had been fouled and that has since been proved by TV footage.

The winger said: “I was devastated and it’s even more devastating when you look back at the replay of the incident.

“I didn’t even need to look back at the replay as I knew I couldn’t have stayed on my feet if I wanted to.

“I’d been chopped and it was just a ridiculous decision from the referee, I don’t know what he was thinking.”

What made the matter even more galling for Rooney was that while he had to sit out the 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon, Tierney was promoted to the Championship clash between Norwich and Watford, where he controversially sent off the Hornets’ Joel Ekstrand after just two minutes.
