Still backs Bury for promotion push

Hatters boss John Still believes that tomorrow’s opponents Bury will be one the teams to challenge for promotion this season.

The Luton chief made his claim while guesting on the Football League show at the weekend, and repeated it during today’s pre-match press conference.

However, he did have note of caution for the Quakers transer policy after they signed the likes of prolific striker Ryan Lowe over the summer.

Still said: “I think they’ll be strong, I think they’ve invested quite well, they’ve invested in experience which is nothing wrong with that.

“You have to be careful about that longer term, because you keep having to change your team and then you have a lull and it’s how you do things.

“I remember quite a few years ago, Hereford going from Div Two to Div One, I think with predominantly loan players.

“Once those loan players come back, they come down and ended up coming out.”

It wasn’t a method that Still wanted to try at Kenilworth Road though as he added: “I’m not knocking how anyone else does it.

“I just believe if you can start a process of those young, hungry, ambitious players and gradually keep adding to it and adding to it, then in three or four years, you’ve got a reasonable young, experienced, energetic, athletic, ambitious team and that’s how I believe the right way to do it is.

“You need your experience, you do, but gradually your experience becomes your 24-year-olds.

“Bury have gone for some experienced players, Lowe, (Daniel) Nardiello, both experienced players, both know the level, both are goalscorers.

“But they’re not going to be there long term. If they’re not their long term you have to be a club who can sustain, keep turning players over, keep going for players.

“I’m not saying Bury have done any of those, but you can get dragged into that and it’s hard to build as you keep changing, so I’m not quite sure that’s the right thing for us.”
