Tyler: Whole squad would be behind James

Hatters keeper Mark Tyler insists the whole squad would be right behind David James should he be offered the vacant Luton Town job.

The former England stopper, who won 53 caps for his country, remains the bookies’ favourite to take charge at Kenilworth Road.

James had been working for the club on a temporary basis under previous manager John Still and was in the directors’ box for Town’s 2-0 defeat against Wycombe on Saturday.

When asked about his potential appointment, Tyler said: “Jamo’s been here for 18 months and it’s been great to have him around the place.

“I love working with him, he joins in with us. The other side of it, manager-wise, I don’t know how he is because he’s just taken a few sessions and it’s more the ones who aren’t in the squad.

“He might have a total different style of management to everyone else, but if it’s him, everyone knows him, we’ll be right behind him and we’ll see.

“If he’s the manager, I can see the whole squad being behind him and we’d have no problems with it.”

James has little previous managerial experience, spending a brief spell at Indian Premier League club Kera Blasters in 2014, where he helped the side, owned by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, to finish runners-up.

On whether the former Liverpool and Portsmouth keeper could be a success in what would be his first job in English football, recalled full-back Stephen O’Donnell said: “Honestly I don’t know, I’ve seen many inexperienced managers come and do brilliantly, and I’ve also probably seen the other way too.

“Whatever the directors decide, hopefully it’s the best for the club and we can push on, because that travelling support deserves more than where we are and hopefully the new manager, whoever it is, brings that.”
