Wilshere felt Terriers draw was a 'good point' for Luton

Town stretch unbeaten run at the Accu Stadium

Hatters boss Jack Wilshere labelled it a ‘good point’ for his side as they extended their unbeaten run to five games with a battling 1-1 draw against league leaders Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

The two sides went into the contest with identical records from their last four matches, winning all of them, which meant it was a case of first v fourth at the Accu Stadium. Luton then took the lead through Jordan Clark’s seventh goal of the season just before half time, a terrific finish that saw the midfielder fashion a sliver of space for himself to then fire into the bottom corner.

Ex-Town striker Joe Taylor hammered home a volley just four minutes after the restart to equalise for the Terriers, before an absorbing contest saw both sides give absolutely everything in their efforts to win it, eventually having to settle for a point. On the outcome, and making it five matches unbeaten to move third in the table for 24 hours at least, Wilshere said: “We try and keep that separate from the players.

"Of course they feel it, as momentum in this league, at any level of football actually, is really important and it keeps building confidence, which is really important that we continue to do that. We try and isolate each game, but we’re also aware of the run we’ve been on, so we didn’t come into the game thinking, okay let’s get a point, but when we reflect on it, it will probably be a good point.

"I felt we started well, but we played into their hands a little bit towards the end of the first half and they started to get on the front foot, which they’re good at. There’s a reason they are where they are, they do that consistently well. We came out of that situation well, we scored in the first half and we felt in the second half we could go and take the game to them. We know they were going to start fast, the idea was to soak that up. In general we did soak it up, apart from that moment, and it’s a really good finish from Taylor. Then we came back into the game and I think you saw in the second half two good teams that are both trying to win it.”

Although content with how Town went about their business, particularly defensively, with goalkeeper James Shea producing a commanding display, while Izzy Jones, who moved to left back after Kal Naismith went off injured, was absolutely exceptional, Wilshere felt his players could have done more when they had the ball in dangerous areas themselves, adding: “When they (Huddersfield) reflect on it as well, they’ll feel the same, as we probably didn’t create any more clear-cut opportunities.

"We threatened some half chances, the same as them, and that’s probably what we’ll reflect on and review over the next few days, is the quality in the final third, is the decision-making. But given the context of what the players have been through the last three or four weeks with the games and the performances they’ve given and the results, that’s the consequence of doing good things consistently well.

"On reflection, more quality in the final third, but the way we defended and the spirit we showed, set-pieces as well, I thought we defended really well as they’re good at them, so credit to the players. When the game became like that, it became open, it is difficult in those moments, as if the space is there, you want to try and attack or make the final pass. We probably put it a little bit too far in front, or a little bit too far behind, or made the wrong decision. When the game becomes stretched, that suits them in my opinion, but we also soaked those moments up quite well.”
