Southern League Division One Central: Barton Rovers 8 Petersfield Town 0

Barton Rovers ran riot against basement side Petersfield Town at the weekend, as the hosts struck eight times in a resounding victory.

From the first whistle, the hosts looked like they meant business, as Elliot Bailey opened the scoring on 14 minutes with a thunderous low shot that beat a busy Rams keeper Matt Collins.

Scott Sinclair’s rasping drive cannoned off the bar before Bailey scored his and Barton’s second of the afternoon.

Connor Calcutt was soon on the scoresheet before Tommy Smith and Jimmy Hartley both found the net to make to 5-0 at the break.

Two early changes in the 2nd half gave meaningful run outs to Jack Keating and Victor Osobu, allowed key Rovers players a breather.

Calcutt was denied by a fine Collins stop, with Danny Watson’s follow up only finding the side-netting.

However, Calcutt did extend Rovers’ lead further on 68 minutes with a fine strike and after Watson (80) made it 7-0, Calcutt wrapped up his hat-trick with six minutes to go, making it 26 for the season.

Manager Jimmy Gray said: “I thought the lads did well.

“When things are one-sided shape and discipline goes out the window but they stuck to the instructions to the letter.

“Credit where it’s due to Petersfield, they battled to the end and we had to work for every one of those goals, none were gifted to us.

“With five games to go now we just need to keep digging in and pulling out results.

“Next Saturday is tough game away to fourth placed Marlow but a play-off spot is firmly in our hands if we stick to the task ahead.”
