HOCKEY: Luton Ladies hit by late leveller

Luton Ladies were held to a 3-3 draw in their Five Counties League Premier Division clash with Leighton Buzzard.

The hosts opened the scoring from a short corner, but Luton hit back as Suzanne Starkey equalised.

Leighton were back in front once more, only for Starkey to draw her side level again.

In the second period, Luton had the lead for the first time as Clare Philby converted a short corner, but with eight minutes left, Buzzard scored to earn a point.

The seconds were beaten 11-0 by a very strong Blueharts IIIs side in Division Three.

Luton’s men’s side enjoyed a 4-3 victory over Vauxhall in their East Men’s League Division Two South West contest.

The hosts trailed early on, but substitute Luke Titmus had an immediate impact, dribbling his way through the defence to make it 1-1.

Cameron Bright then put Luton in front, while after the break they scored again as Jack Madden found Bryn Owen who made no mistake.

Home keeper Tom Dobson had to come off injured, allowing Vauxhall to net twice and pull level, but in the final minute, Owen selflessly teed up Sam Herbert for the winner.

Man of the match went to James Wallis for his solid performance in defence.

The seconds lost 4-0 at Hertford IIs in Division Four South West, while Luton’s thirds won 3-1 at local rivals Luton Vagrants in their Division Seven South West meeting.

Vagrants had the lead after a defensive slip-up, but Luton dominated possession and levelled in the 27th minute courtesy of Alan Clarke.

After the break, Luton failed to convert several short corners, before moving 2-1 ahead when Alex Robinson netted.

The third arrived too as Robinson hit the post as did Chris Madden, with the rebound hitting the keeper and crossing the line.

Vagrants forced a smart save from Luton keeper Thomas Briggs late on, but his side held firm to take the win.
