The award celebrates the centre’s innovative project, which transformed previously unused rooftop space into a thriving green area, now home to four beehives and more than 150,000 bees.

Developed as part of the centre’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments, the project combines urban greening, biodiversity, employee wellbeing and community fundraising. The roof garden features year-round flowering plants, a composting system and water feature and was created using entirely recycled materials, achieving zero-waste status without external funding.

Three members of the centre team, finance manager Tracey Bateman, centre administrator Martina Hall and deputy security manager Simon Rooms, have also completed specialist training to become beekeepers, while bee awareness training has been delivered to the wider team.

The project has also made an important contribution to the local community. Honey produced by the rooftop hives is sold to raise money for Luton Foodbank, with the team smashing its original target of 100lbs of honey and £1,000 for the charity.

To date, an impressive 342lbs of honey has been harvested, raising £3,420 for Luton Foodbank.

Laura McCluskey, centre director at Frasers Plus Luton, said: “We are absolutely delighted to see our bees recognised with another award. What started as an idea to transform an unused part of the centre has developed into something that benefits our environment, our team and the wider Luton community.

From training as beekeepers and maintaining the hives to raising money through our honey, our team has really embraced the project. To have their hard work recognised at the Commonwealth Environment and CSR Awards is something we are incredibly proud of.”

The latest award adds to the growing recognition received by the project and proves once again that Frasers Plus Luton’s bees are creating quite the buzz.
