OPINION: A purple flag for Luton and a bright future for our town centre
We are delighted that Luton has retained Purple Flag accreditation for the seventh year running. While no town is without its challenges, this achievement recognises the collective work taking place across Luton to enhance safety, support businesses and create a vibrant evening and night-time economy that people can enjoy with confidence.

Purple Flag is recognised as the gold standard for destinations between 5pm and 5am, celebrating places that offer a strong mix of hospitality, culture, entertainment and safety. For Luton, this accreditation reflects the commitment and collaboration that continues to drive positive change across our town centre.
At Luton BID, we are proud to support this work. Alongside Luton Council, Bedfordshire Police, local businesses and other partners, we continue to invest in initiatives that strengthen the town centre experience, improve perceptions and support the businesses that play such an important role in our local economy.

Several projects were highlighted as part of the accreditation process, including the return of the SOS Bus, which provides valuable support and safeguarding for people enjoying a night out, and the Safe Radio Scheme, which strengthens communication between businesses, CCTV operators and key agencies. The Creative Shopfront Improvement Scheme was also recognised for helping to improve the appearance of the town centre while showcasing local creativity.
A thriving evening economy is essential to Luton's future success. Our restaurants, bars, cafés, entertainment venues and cultural attractions help create a destination that attracts visitors, supports jobs and contributes to a vibrant town centre offer.
October is Purple Flag Month, a national celebration of accredited destinations, and throughout the month Luton BID has been running a social media campaign to shine a spotlight on the businesses that make up our evening and night-time economy. We've been showcasing local venues, sharing their stories and encouraging residents and visitors to discover the fantastic range of experiences available in the town centre. It has also been an opportunity to recognise the dedicated owners and teams whose hard work helps bring the town centre to life.
While we are delighted to have received this accreditation, we also recognise that there is still work to be done. Purple Flag is not a finish line. We know there are areas where we can continue to improve, and we understand some people's perceptions and experiences of the town centre do not always reflect the ambitions we have for Luton.

That is why this recognition is important. It acknowledges the progress that has been made while also encouraging us to keep moving forward. At Luton BID, we are passionate about building on this success and working with our partners to make further improvements to safety, cleanliness, the visitor experience and the overall appeal of the town centre.
Maintaining Purple Flag status requires ongoing commitment, investment and collaboration. We remain focused on supporting businesses, promoting the town centre and delivering projects that make a positive difference for our levy payers and the wider community.
As Purple Flag Month comes to a close, we can take pride in what has been achieved, while remaining ambitious about what's next. Luton has made significant progress, but our work continues, and we are committed to helping create a town centre that businesses, residents and visitors can be proud of.
