Piano launch to brighten up Luton shopping centre

An ornately decorated piano will be unveiled in Luton this Saturday allowing musical shoppers to play to their heart's content.

The idea for the new piano at The Mall came from Ellen Waghorn, creative producer of Luton Library Theatre.

A total of three pianos were donated by members of the community and decorated by Luton Open Arts.

Ellen said: “The aim is to brighten up people’s day and introduce a bit of art into our everyday lives.

“The pianos are beautifully decorated with themes of Luton by local artists and are entirely playable.

“I hope people of all abilities take advantage of them.”

The project is another big score for Luton Open Arts, who have carried out artistic revamps at hospitals, pubs and other public venues.

The Mall’s manager Roy Greening said: “We are thrilled to be working with Luton Culture to introduce public pianos in The Mall, which we’re sure will be a popular success.

“We’d like to welcome all visitors of all abilities to come and have a play!”

The launch will take place at 1pm this Saturday, February 6 with an invited pianist playing the donated and decorated instrument. The piano will be situated in the glass atrium next to St Georges Square.
