Hatters winger JJ O’Donnell tasted Wembley despair as Gateshead fell to a 2-1 defeat against Cambridge United in their Skrill Premier play-off final.

O’Donnell was brought on a 56th minute sub just moments after Liam Hughes had put the U’s ahead.

Ryan Donaldson, who left Heed in the summer, then made it 2-0 with a free kick, before Jack Lester pulled one back for the Tynesiders with 10 to go, but it wasn’t enough.

O’Donnell, who still has a year left on his Hatters contract, tweeted: “Devastated is an understatement! No worse feeling in the world than losing at Wembley.

“However, it’s been a pleasure to play with a great set of lads and a great club in @GatesheadFC for the last 4 months, loved every minute!”
