McGeehan hopes Hatters can go under the radar

Luton head to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, some eight points away from the top seven, with just 16 games remaining.

Town are priced as high as 100-1 to win promotion with league sponsors Sky Bet, but after the 1-0 triumph at Wycombe last weekend, McGeehan retains belief of a successful end to the season.

He said: “Possibly we could go under the radar with it, we believe as a team that we can nick that play-off place and that would be amazing for the squad.

“That’s what we want to do, as we were favourites, but we haven’t been good enough for the first half of the season, that’s why we’re in the position we are in now.

“But we’ll be fighting to the end and hopefully that will put us in the position we want to be in.”

McGeehan acknowledged time was running out for his side to make their move, but believes that the appointment of Nathan Jones, coupled with back-to-back away victories at Mansfield and the Chairboys, has left the team in good heart.

He continued: “It’s not too late for the play-offs, with results like that (beating Wycombe).

“That’s what we’re still hoping for, we’ve left it a bit late maybe, but we’ll keep pushing and fighting for it as it’s what the fans deserve and want. It’s been a bit of transition and hopefully now we can push on more.

“We just need to concentrate on winning games as we haven’t done that enough this season and if we do that, we’ll see where we are at the end of the season and go from there.”

Jones himself wasn’t drawn on whether his side could be involved in the play-off places come May, as he said: “Lets look ahead and lets not look back. It’s clichéd, but you never know, lets just see where we go.

“We’re looking ahead to Wimbledon, it’s a very, very difficult game. They’re a good side, put you under a lot of pressure and we’re going to have to do the same kind of performance again and more.”

Meanwhile, on Saturday’s clash, skipper Scott Cuthbert added: “We go to Wimbledon who are a tough opposition and have got a big, big team size-wise.

“They put the ball in the box and put you under pressure and it will be very similar to this game.

“From our point of view we just need to be a little bit better on the ball but if we keep the same defensive qualities we showed against Wycombe we should be okay.”
