Nugent highly impressed by new Hatters boss

The 46-year-old was appointed by Jones to his backroom staff recently after ending his nine-year stint at Leyton Orient.

On his first impressions. Nugent said: “He’s very good, very, very organised, knows exactly what he wants.

“Players will know what he wants and as time builds, you’d like to think things would be reflected on the pitch in terms of results and in terms of performances.

“I’ve seen already how we want to do it at the football club and hopefully supporters will see that as well.

“It takes a bit of time, no matter what it is.

“A new regime at a football club and if you want to instil new things on to players, new ideas, it does take time.

“The supporters have been fantastic too and I’d like to think they can see that there’s something trying to get done at the club.”

Asked why he decided to leave his role as first team coach at Orient, Nugent said: “I just felt it was possibly time for me to move on really, in terms of a career decision.

“I didn’t have anything to come into, but they were going to appoint a new manager.

“I’ve worked under numerous people there and enjoyed every minute of it, so it was just time to move on and see if there was any other opportunities out there.”

Nugent hadn’t worked with Jones prior to his appointment at Kenilworth Road, as he said: “I knew him kind of through watching games, even if it was just watching different teams for different tactics and seeing where you can move forward as a coach.

“He was taking teams before and I’d go out and watch the training and it’s just from being out and about, watching matches and playing against him over the years.”

When asked how his role would work alongside the manager, Nugent added: “Lot of clubs will have different coaches, Nathan likes to get on the grass, do his bits and pieces, so we will split coaching.

“Some days he’ll do more than me, some days I’ll do more than him, so there’s still evolving that relationship in terms of how we do it.

“I’ll be watching matches as we’re always looking at players and will build a big database on them.”
