Lightning strikes air traffic control at Luton airport as flooding causes travel delays
A lightning strike at Luton Airport caused flights to be temporarily suspended while flooding caused delays on Thursday evening (August 27).
A spokesperson for the airport said the strike affected Air Traffic Control equipment, resulting in a suspension of operations between 5.40pm and 7.15pm on Thursday, August 27.

The disruption led to a number of cancellations and diversions to flights.
But the spokesperson explained: “London Luton Airport is open and operating as normal following a lightning strike yesterday evening that affected Air Traffic Control equipment and resulted in a temporary suspension of flights.”
Meanwhile, Bedfordshire Police said there were significant delays on Airport Way and Airport Approach Road due to flash flooding – which restricted access to and from the terminal.
The warning comes as heavy rain affects parts of Bedfordshire, with motorists urged to check their routes before setting off.
A yellow weather warning is currently in place for parts of the county.
Passengers travelling from Luton Airport should check directly with their airline for the latest information about their flight before leaving for the airport.
