ER members calling themselves 'C.S.I. Earth' taped off an area inside the store as a crime scene to bring attention to the RoundUp weedkiller product.

The product has been the source of legal disputes in the United States, and ER has staged rallies against it across the UK.

The group alleges its glyphosate ingredient harms bees and the ecosystem.

An ER Luton spokesman said: ""Further to the human risk, Glyphosate has been shown to impact the development of young bees and could contribute to the failure and death of bee colonies.

"With the global population of bees in decline, Glyphosate is one of a number of chemicals widely used in agriculture that are suspected to be responsible. The loss of bees, a critical pollinator, could cause crop failure and famine."

A Homebase spokesman said: "We continue to manage our garden care products responsibly, working closely with supplier partners. We also have several glyphosate free alternatives available to customers."
