Rail lines between London St Pancras International and Bedford were blocked after a person was hit by a train between Luton and Bedford at around 5.30pm today (May 12)

An East Midlands Railway spokesperson, said: "Sadly, at approximately 5.30pm a person was hit by a train between Luton and Bedford stations. Our deepest condolences are with the friends and families of everyone involved and we are assisting with any enquiries needed."

By around 8.10pm it East Midlands Railway reported that trains were once again running.

It tweeted: "After a person was hit by a train earlier, the route has now reopened between Bedford and Luton. Services are able to run through the area again, and we are working to restore our timetable. Services remain subject to disruption as trains and crew are out of place. We recommend you travel via alternative routes, where tickets are being accepted."

Rail replacement buses were put in place while the lines were blocked - but East Midlands Railway reported IT difficulties that prevented it from being able to update passengers via screens at railway stations.
