Fontenelle not looking at play-off picture

Dunstable Town boss Tony Fontenelle has played down his side's chance of reaching the Southern League Premier Division play-off places this season.

Although an awful run of form which saw the Blues pick up just four point from 10 games, a win against Hungerford on Saturday means they are only eight points off the play-off spots with a couple of games in hand over the sides above them.

But Fontenelle said: “If it’s mathematically possible (a play-off place), it’s something we will look at, but when it comes down to it my only concern is about the next game and to make sure we get a good result against Chesham.

“We are beating last season’s tally of points already with eight games to go and that’s what it is really about.”

Dunstable take on nearby Chesham United at home this afternoon, a side that thrashed the Blues in the reverse fixture 5-1, but the away side have one of the worst records on the road in the top half of the Southern Premier Division, with only three wins.

Fontenelle doesn’t believe this counts for much though, as he said: “At this level of football you try not to read too much into it.

“Just because some people would say the same about us and then we go to somewhere like Hungerford and get the win, I think it comes down to who plays the best on the day, irrespective of statistics.”

Dunstable already have a depleted squad through injury, but Saturday’s game has worsened the issue, with Fontenelle’s side now facing a number of fixtures in a short amount of time, after poor weather over Christmas lead to postponements.

Fontenelle said: “I know I say it every week, but it’s another tough game.

“We’ve got a few niggles from Saturday’s game, we’ve got a small squad, so after that win we have to go back to the drawing board and try to work out how to get a positive result on Monday.”
