Benson unfazed over Town’s next opponents

Hatters striker Paul Benson doesn’t have any potential opponent in mind ahead of tonight’s FA Cup second round draw.

Town are in the hat courtesy of a 4-2 win over Newport County AFC and will find out who they will face live on BBC Two at 6pm, where they are ball number 25.

Benson, who scored his first of the season against the Exiles, said: “If I’m totally honest, there’s not really anyone that would do me.

“A home draw is all I’d say that’s my requirement. And any game that gives us a chance of getting into the third round, but that’s any team that’s left in the draw.”

The striker admits the second round is a difficult stage of the competition as clubs know they’re one game away from pulling out a huge team.

He continued: “The second round is the one where you think that one more game and you have the opportunity to go to one of the big guns, like a (Manchester) United or an Arsenal or a Liverpool.

“For clubs in League Two and even League One, that’s the round you really want to progress from as you get that carrot of playing one of the big guys.”

Benson believes that the club are geared for a lengthy cup run this year though as he said: “It’s a brilliant competition and it’s great for anyone involved. If you’re a step eight side you’re in the preliminary rounds and the qualifying rounds and you see Warrington, that’s their final.

“No matter what team you are, you always feel that a round is your final and as long as we get to the round we feel is our final, we can be very happy with how we’ve played in the competition.

“I would probably say maybe another round on from the third round (is our final).

“It depends who you play in the third round though. If it’s Man United away then the third round is your final, but if you then pull out a League Two side at home you get the feeling you could push on.”

If Luton can get through the next stage, then Benson would like a trip to Upton Park, as he added: “West Ham would be a good tie if we got to the third round.

“A lot of my family are West Ham supporters and I’ve never played there, so that’d be a nice one.

“We’re talking a little bit ahead of ourselves though as we’ve still got a little while to go though.”
