Shrews boss elated to snap up 'electric' striker from Luton Town
Gbode heads to League Two side for the campaign
Shrewsbury Town boss Gavin Cowan was elated to snap up ‘electric’ Luton striker Joe Gbode on a season-long loan deal this evening.
The 21-year-old moved to Kenilworth Road from Gillingham during last season’s summer transfer window, making his debut in the 3-2 home defeat to Plymouth Argyle, and going on to feature five times in total. Out of favour under Jack Wilshere though, he was loaned to National League side Woking in January, having played for two different EFL clubs already, going on to score four goals in 16 matches for the Cards, as they finished 10th in the division.
With first-team football unlikely once more with Town this term, then another move away for the youngster was deemed the best option, as he has headed to the Croud Meadow Stadium to become the Shrews’ seventh signing so far. A clearly happy Gowan, who was appointed in January, talked up his new acquisition, particularly for the way in which he dropped down into non-league last season when it became apparent he had no other option if he wanted to get some regular game time.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Cowan said: “Joe perfectly fits the profile of player we want to bring to the football club. He's a very good player at this level, with pace, power and the ability to score goals. When he gets defenders one-on-one, he's electric, and we're really excited to have him at the club.
"Joe is another really positive addition for us. He's young, strong, athletic and quick, and we've seen the level he's capable of reaching. We're excited to work with him. What really stood out to me was his attitude. After moving from Gillingham to Luton last year, he found himself out of favour, but instead of waiting for an opportunity, he chose to go and play regular football in the National League.
"He's not a National League player – he's an EFL player – but he showed a fantastic mindset by doing whatever it took to keep playing and continue his development. He's someone I've known about for a while. He's still only 21 and is a striker with enormous potential. We've already seen what a great character he is. Now it's about helping him take the next step and we're pleased to have him in ahead of our first pre-season friendly.”
