Town did not concede a goal with Wilkinson in the side in September, while the summer signing from Dagenham & Redbridge also scored his first goal of the season against Oxford United.

On scooping the award, the 22-year-old said: “I’m very pleased to have won it, it’s a big achievement to be the best player in the month out of the whole league, so hopefully I can carry on performing well for the team.

“I’ve never won it before and there was some good competition in there from other players who have had very good months as well, so I’m just happy to have won it.”

Sky Sports’ Football League pundit Don Goodman, who was on the judging panel, said: “He has thankfully recovered from a back injury and his presence makes the Luton defence difficult to breach.

“They did not concede a goal in September. Says it all.”

Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery added: “It would have been 100/1 for Luton to have kept clean sheets in each of the four games in which Luke Wilkinson played, but that’s exactly what they did.

“Luke also grabbed himself a goal during Luton’s 2-0 victory over Oxford. He was 25/1 to grab the first of the game, and 12/1 to score at any point during that game.”

The manager of the month award went to Southend boss Phil Brown, who Luton host at Kenilworth Road tomorrow.
