Held on Saturday, 24 October, at The Pavilion, Luton Hall Masonic Centre, Bowling Green Lane, the event attracted 274 bookings and provided an important opportunity to raise awareness of prostate health and the value of early detection.

The event was co-ordinated by Ken Evans, PSA Testing Co-ordinator for Bedfordshire Freemasons, who praised the volunteers and organisations whose support helped ensure the day ran smoothly despite challenging weather conditions.

Ken thanked the management committee and staff at The Pavilion, and all the supporting Freemasons for giving their time to support the initiative.

Additional health support proves popular

This year’s event introduced two valuable additions to the programme.

Members of the local NHS Group, Irish Forum, provided blood pressure checks and general wellbeing assessments, while Magpas Air Ambulance delivered demonstrations and instruction on emergency life saving techniques.

Both initiatives were warmly received, extending the event’s focus beyond PSA testing to include wider health awareness and potentially lifesaving skills.

Test results underline the importance of follow-up

Of the 274 appointments booked, 246 tests were completed, with 28 people not attending.

The results reported were:

  • 193 green results – within the expected range.

  • 22 amber results – requiring appropriate follow-up.

  • 29 red results – requiring prompt medical attention.

  • Two results were pending.

Men receiving amber or red results are urged to contact their GP surgery as soon as possible and follow the advice provided with their individual reports. Anyone experiencing difficulties accessing support can contact the helpline operated by the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust (GFCT). Ken Evans has also offered assistance to anyone who needs further help.

Ken said: “I would like to thank everyone who contributed their time and effort to make this event such a success. Despite the weather, the team worked exceptionally well, and we received many complimentary comments from those who attended.

“I wish everyone who was tested well and hope they have received their results and are taking any necessary follow-up action.”

Supporting men's health across Bedfordshire

The event forms part of Bedfordshire Freemasons’ ongoing commitment to community wellbeing, encouraging men to take their health seriously and seek medical advice when needed.

Through initiatives such as these, Bedfordshire Freemasons aim to improve awareness of prostate health, promote early detection and help men make informed decisions about their wellbeing.
