OPINION: We do the right thing, even when it is hard, even when no-one is watching

Walk down the corridors of The Chalk Hills Academy today, and you will spot something catching the light - a striking gold tie, worn with quiet pride by a select group of students.

This is not just a fresh addition to our school uniform. The gold tie is the centrepiece of a new strategy designed to recognise and elevate the young people who do the right thing every single time—not for applause, and not just when a teacher is looking, but because they have the self-discipline and integrity to hold themselves to the highest standards.

At its heart, this initiative is about redefining what it means to be a role model in our community. It is our way of telling every student that their daily habits, character, and choices truly matter.

Sixteen-year-old Heidi spoke about what receiving the honour means to her: "I really appreciate being awarded the gold tie. It is really nice to be recognised for all of the hard work and effort I put into school every day and for always doing the right thing. Sometimes students like me aren’t noticed, but having the gold tie means we are now seen by all staff and students."

Her peer, Unitas, also sixteen, shared how the initiative has shifted motivation across the year group: "I have seen students in my year group be celebrated for doing the simple things right every single day. I am someone who works hard, but I do occasionally get things wrong. I have seen my peers be recognised, and it’s given me the motivation to work harder every day so I can be promoted to a gold tie student."

What Does the Gold Tie Represent?

The gold tie is not awarded easily. It is not a prize for a single good deed or a one-off high mark in an exam.

Instead, it is a badge of honour earned by students who consistently meet and exceed expectations across several non-negotiable pillars of school life: excellent attendance, a positive attitude to learning, flawless uniform presentation, consistent homework completion, and impeccable manners.

Mr Rahman, Principal at The Chalk Hills Academy, explained the vision behind the scheme: "We want our young people with the best attitudes to be seen and noticed. We don't want people to be noticed and focussed on for the wrong reasons, and sometimes in education this happens far too often.

"Schools across the country, including ours, are excellent at dealing with poor behaviour and giving attention to those students—and rightly so. However, we want to ensure those who do the right thing every single day are given even more attention. This creates a healthy ambition amongst young people and provides them with the encouragement to follow in the footsteps of our gold tie students."

Doing the Right Thing When No One is Watching

The true essence of the gold tie is integrity.

It is easy to behave well when a reward is immediately visible, or when a teacher is standing right beside you. But true character is forged in the quiet moments: picking up a piece of litter when no one is around, choosing to focus on studies when distractions beckon, keeping a uniform smart on the walk home, or treating a peer with kindness away from the crowd.

By introducing these ties, we are making the "invisible" visible. We are shining a spotlight on the students who form the quiet backbone of our school’s positive culture—those whose daily consistency ensures our Luton academy remains a safe, ambitious, and respectful place to learn.

As our gold tie wearers walk our corridors, they carry a responsibility. They are our standard-bearers, showing younger students what is possible through steadfast effort, high character, and the proof that in life, doing the right thing matters
