Funding boost to tackle potholes

“Fill those holes!” That’s the message from MP Alex Mayer as the government revealed another cash boost to help councils fix potholes.
This coming year Central Bedfordshire Council who are responsible for repairing potholes will receive £9.6m from the government. This is the biggest cash settlement ever. The budget confirmed the sum will continue to rise to £14.4m by 2030. In contrast in the final year of the last Conservative Government the figure stood at £7.6m.
The council can then choose how much to top up the pot from local resources.
Alex Mayer MP said: “Local roads are in need of repair and the council should deliver immediate improvements for communities and residents. Local people shouldn’t have to dodge potholes or pay for car repairs because of years of neglect. It’s time to fill those holes!“
The cost of pothole damage to drivers is substantial. RAC data shows drivers face six potholes per mile in Bedfordshire, while pothole damage to tyres, wheels and suspensions now costs motorists around £600 on average. The AA says 96% of drivers rank fixing potholes as their top priority.
Central Bedfordshire Council will unlock the full funding only if they publish clear pothole and maintenance data.
