Luton nursery celebrates Ofsted success after first inspection

A Luton nursery has been praised by Ofsted after its first ever inspection.

Pumpkin Lane Day Nursery, based at Windsor House on Adelaide Street, was inspected on July 16, less than a year after it registered with Ofsted in November 2025.

And it was rated as meeting the expected standards in every category.

Inspectors praised its open culture, saying safeguarding was treated as “everyone’s responsibility”.

They added children at the nursery were “happy, settled and emotionally secure” and praised the relationships they had developed with staff.

The report said: “Children form lovely relationships with caring staff that are responsive and sensitive, giving reassurance and hugs when needed.”

The report found children were making progress from their starting points, with activities helping them develop their communication, social and mathematical skills.

Inspectors observed children working together during sand play as they poured, scooped and experimented with funnels, helping them develop early problem-solving and communication skills.

Staff use visual supports, objects of reference and consistent routines to help children manage transitions throughout the day.

Ofsted said their approach meant children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) were able to participate in daily routines and experiences.

Staff were found to be responsive to children’s individual needs, while information gathered from parents when children first join the nursery helped staff understand their routines and individual requirements.

The nursery’s curriculum was described as “well-balanced”, with activities planned around children’s interests and what they need to learn at each stage of their development.

Children were also found to enjoy sharing stories and developing a love of books, while their physical development was supported through activities including climbing, cycling and ball games in the garden.

Nursery Manager Chloe Perkins said: “We are incredibly proud of the outcome of Pumpkin Lane Day Nursery’s first Ofsted inspection.

"As a relatively new nursery, to have achieved the expected standard across every area of the inspection framework, alongside meeting safeguarding standards, in such a short space of time is a fantastic achievement for our whole team.”

Perkins said: “We were particularly proud that the report recognised the secure and caring relationships our children have with staff, the progress children make from their individual starting points, our inclusive approach and support for children with SEND and the positive relationships we have built with our families.

“These are all areas that sit at the heart of what we want Pumpkin Lane to represent.”

She said “Opening a new nursery and building a setting, team and community from the ground up is a huge undertaking.

"To see what we have achieved together within our first year makes me immensely proud."

The report said: “Leaders want the best for the children and families who attend the nursery.

"Leaders have worked hard to get the setting to its current standard.”

However, inspectors identified some areas where the nursery can improve, such as staff not always being quick enough to recognise when activities were not meeting the needs of all children, with Ofsted saying some children “flit between activities and do not engage for long periods of time”.

But Ofsted said the nursery’s leaders were dedicated to their roles and committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for children and their families.

The report added that the setting was still new and that leaders had worked hard to reach its current standard, while recognising that the nursery was “on a journey” to continue improving outcomes for children.

Leaders will now focus on helping staff extend activities to further children’s learning and keep them engaged for longer, alongside embedding consistent routines across the nursery.
