Drivers heading southbound on the M1 are being warned to expect huge delays during Wednesday morning rush-hour.

Traffic is tailing back for nearly nine miles with delays of up to 90 minutes back to Junction 13 near Milton Keynes after Highways England closed three lanes to clean up a spillage near Luton.

A spokesman for the agency said: "Traffic officers are dealing with a broken down vehicle and a large spillage of hydraulic fluid which has closed three of the four lanes near to Junction 11A.

"Please allow extra time and consider using alternative routes."

Traffic cameras show more queues on the A5 southbound as drivers attempt to avoid the incident.

Highways England are advising travellers from the Midlands heading for London and the South East to use the M42 and M40.
