Still praise for Wall after ‘stupid week’

Hatters boss John Still praised striker Alex Wall’s response in training after what he described as a ‘stupid week’ recently.

Wall had been lambasted by his manager for a ‘shocking’ performance in the development games against Barnet and Bournemouth and a poor attitude in training earlier this month, but those words appear to have struck a chord with the forward.

He was thrust in for his first start of the campaign against Cambridge United on Saturday and speaking today, Still said: “It’s a funny old situation because he’d done all right, but then he had a disappointing game against Barnet, where he could have done better.

“Then he had a situation where he got himself sent off because he swore at the referee.

“Well if you’re not having the best of times, and that happens, you don’t want to compound it by making yourself unavailable to play for the development team when you’re not quite in the first team because you’re going to lose fitness.

“So my point was, he had to grow up. He’s not a bad lad, he’s not a nasty lad, he’s not this, he’s not that, but he had a stupid week really and that’s part and parcel of him growing up and learning how to be professional.

“If you don’t remind people of that, they perhaps think they haven’t done too much wrong, they’ve just not had a good game, done something silly in the game and it doesn’t matter.

“But it does matter, and I just reminded him that it does matter and he responded by training his absolute socks off.”
