Eric – still bringing sunshine

Now a brand new production of the Olivier-winning play Morecambe – The Man What Brought us Sunshine will be at Dunstable’s Grove Theatre for one night only on Saturday (June 14).

All-round entertainer Bob Golding plays the man who was not only one half of the immortal Morecambe and Wise comedy duo but also a director of Luton Town Football Club and an avid Hatters fan.

Bob said: “The play is a celebration of Eric’s life, rather than a tribute act.

“It’s a one-man show and initially I had to focus on 60 pages of monologue and 200 sound cues.

“But now I’m up and running, it’s a little daunting playing a national treasure.

“I was only 14 when Eric died but I have fond memories of sitting with my grandmother laughing at the same jokes that have appealed to so many generations.

“It’s still amazing that their 1977 Christmas special had an audience of 28 million – the Queen is alleged to have rescheduled Christmas dinner so she could watch.”

Bob, 43, has wanted to be an actor ever since he can remember.

“I was very shy and my parent sent me to a drama club when I was eight or nine,” he said. “They hoped it would bring me out of my shell – and it did.

“Then I saw the legendary Bill Owen in panto in Mother Goose and thought to myself ‘That looks like a good job.’”

His career has gone from strength to strength. His credits include everything from the Royal Variety Show to Mr Selfridge.
